ALEXANDER SEIJI GRAHAM

ALEXANDER SEIJI GRAHAM

Alexander was born and raised in the city of London through his British father and Japanese mother. He always pursued with great passion his love for sports and physical activity where he graduated from the World Number 1 University for sports related subjects; Loughborough University, having studied within the field of Sports, Exercise and Health Science.

He further gained extra qualification as a Fitness Instructor and Sports Massage Therapist through separate diplomas and has contributed to the success of numerous professional athletes as well as working with and positively impacting the lives of members of the general population.

Having gained much knowledge and experience during his time in the UK, including managing Japanese athletes during the London 2012 Olympic Games, he came to Kyoto, Japan in 2016 and chose to use his Japanese name, ‘Seiji’ towards his very first private fitness studio, known as 'SEIJI STUDIOS.'

For the first time, through SEIJI STUDIOS, Alexander has been able to fully express and develop his own ideas and skills towards general health, exercise and the fitness industry. During his time in the UK, he noticed a trend with his personal training clients who had areas of overactive and tight muscles which needed maintenance. At the same time, his massage therapy clients had areas of weakness and muscular inactivity that needed strengthening. Why not have an approach which deals with this imbalance in one go? Probing into this question has led to the development of the SeijiApproach™︎

The Origin of SeijiApproach™

SeijiApproach™ is fundamentally rooted in the idea of integrating both training and maintenance to bring about physical and mental change. But why combine these two dimensions in the first place? How did this approach come about? This concept originated from back in the UK, where Alex used to work as a freelance personal trainer and sports massage therapist. He trained general members of the public and athletes alike in public gym spaces, as well as providing sports massage services in separate facilities, offering injury rehabilitation and general therapy for recovery enhancement purposes.

Over the years, what he noticed was that people who consistently trained had physical stiffness, where their muscles became fatigued and tight. Even after intense training, their performance didn't seem to improve. However, after a sports massage session and releasing such tightness, this led to noticeable improvements in exercise performance where some clients were able to break through plateaus and even achieve new personal bests in lifting.

Conversely, people who received only sports massage sessions felt good in their bodies, with their tight muscles feeling relaxed, but still had apparent weakness in certain areas which massage alone was unable to solve. It was recommended that such people train these areas through ‘isolation’ exercises which once again lead to improvements in overall performance as well as an apparent reduction in overall tightness and fatigue the following massage session.

That's where the realization was made of the importance of balance in the body. And to achieve such balance, the high compatibility between training and massage (maintenance) appeared obvious. It was also noticed that training and massage were a separate service, where despite both services sometimes being offered in the same facility, it was never offered as one unified exercise experience.

This discovery came timely as Alex then had the opportunity to move to Japan to open his first SEIJI STUDIOS. This personal space served as almost as a laboratory allowing for trial-and-error experimentations using his own body as well as practising his developing style onto his clients. With time, ideas lead to substance and substance led to results. The results then built up and evolved into the current ‘SeijiApproach™’.
